Overview

On 2nd April 2010, Aarambha Pre-Primary School (APPS) was founded as a day care center with the goal of fostering the development of children with autism (CWA). Children who experience learning difficulties in mainstream schools are enrolled at APPS. The school’s main objective is to develop self-help skills, encourage practice and promote participation in social and community activities. Currently, the school has 25 students across four classes including 17 boys and 8 girls.

The performance of each student is closely supervised and guided by the School Head and Special Educators. APPS adopts a variety of teaching and support strategies, such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), audio-visual methods, play therapy, social stories, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) approach. In addition, students participate in music therapy, one-to-one sessions, and occupational therapy to further support their development.

As outlined in the Annual Plan, APPS carries out its activities and programs systematically. Classroom activities are conducted both individually and in groups, following a need-based approach. Each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), Progress Report, Functional Assessment and student profiles are timely prepared and maintained. Our primary focus is on developing student’s attention, social, communication, daily living, physical and pre-vocational skills. To strengthen cognitive abilities, one-to-one sessions are conducted and to address sensory issues, Occupational Therapy (OT) is provided under the guidance of Special Educators and an Occupational Therapist. To promote socialization within the community, students participate in community education programs, hiking, visits, sports, dance, movie sessions, yoga & meditation and frequent outdoor visits. A daily tracking record is maintained for Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Parents and teachers regularly share videos of student’s activities at home and school. Monthly theme-based activities are also conducted.

The school provides structured programs and activities to support students with autism. Teachers maintain daily communication with parents, sharing updates on student’s routines and activities. Regular APPS (Parents-Teachers Meetings) are conducted to share student’s progress, gather parent feedback and discuss programs and strategies to support student’s development and improvement.
