The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in Inclusive and Special Needs Education, with a specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a one-year academic program designed to prepare educators and professionals to effectively support diverse learners. The program was initially introduced in 2018 as a pilot program under the title “Diploma in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).” Since 2024, it has been formally affiliated with Kathmandu University, School of Education, under the Department of Inclusive Education, Early Childhood Development, and Professional Studies (DIEP). The program is open to individuals holding a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. It is structured into two semesters, each comprising 15 credit hours, and integrates both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The course is designed to build a strong foundation in inclusive and special needs education, with particular emphasis on understanding and supporting individuals with ASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions. The PGDE aims to develop competent professionals equipped to address the educational needs of diverse learners within their communities. It offers a comprehensive understanding of neurodevelopmental disabilities, enabling participants to support students with varying abilities in inclusive settings. The program also fosters inclusive values, attitudes, and practices at both personal and institutional levels. Educators gain in-depth knowledge of child development, learning psychology, and the various factors influencing educational outcomes. The course introduces key philosophies, evolving practices, and policies that support the education of children with disabilities. It also emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to assessing and identifying the needs of individuals with ASD. In addition, the program equips educators with the skills to design and implement inclusive curricula tailored to learners with ASD and other disabilities. Educators are trained in the use of assessment tools and strategies to plan effective educational interventions and refine teaching practices. The course also highlights the importance of family and community involvement and prepares educators to work collaboratively to support learners with high needs. By the end of the program, the educators will be able to: · Develop a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and causes of ASD and associated conditions · Be familiar with the processes involved in screening and diagnosis of ASD · Be acquainted with the stages of child development and the psychology of learning · Understand the structure and objectives of general and special education services · Plan and implement appropriate educational programs for children with ASD · Design interventions for individuals with associated conditions · Integrate therapeutic approaches within classroom settings · Recognize the role of families and promote inclusion within home and community environments This program offers a balanced blend of theory and practice, enabling educators to become reflective practitioners and advocates for inclusive education.
