Introduction

When a child is diagnosed with autism, parents often have many questions about autism itself, how to effectively teach their child, and what the future may hold for both the child and the family. These concerns can be further compounded when access to specialized services is limited. The Parent and Child Training Program (PCTP) is founded on the belief that parents can be the most effective teachers for their children when provided with appropriate knowledge, guidance, and support. The program equips parents with both theoretical understanding and practical skills in teaching methodologies and behavioral management techniques.

Principles

1. Every child with autism has the potential to improve and can be supported to lead a dignified and meaningful life through consistent and appropriate intervention.

2. Parents have a deep understanding of their children; when equipped with effective teaching strategies, they are best positioned to support their child’s learning and development.

3. Knowledge of appropriate teaching methods empowers parents to take an active role in shaping their child’s and family’s future.

4. When parents learn effective ways to interact with and educate their children, parent-child interactions become more meaningful, productive, and enjoyable.

Objectives

1. To help parents understand autism and gain insight into their child’s unique ways of thinking and learning.

2. To enhance parents’ ability to effectively interact with and teach their children.

3. To support children’s development through the teaching of essential skills.

4. To empower parents, foster support systems, reduce stress, and improve overall family well-being.

Program Overview

The PCTP follows a structured and consistent daily routine, recognizing the importance of predictability for children with autism. Parents are encouraged to be well-prepared and organized before each session to ensure smooth transitions and minimize waiting time for children.

The first two weeks of the program focus on building a foundational understanding of autism. These sessions include comprehensive lectures on communication, behavioral principles and modification, structured teaching, teaching strategies, play skills, sensory processing, social stories, and preparation for adulthood. During this phase, trainers lead group activities while parents begin applying strategies in one-on-one sessions with their children.

By the third week, a structured timetable is introduced in which parents take active roles in conducting group sessions. For example, one parent may lead a morning activity while another facilitates music time. This approach allows parents to gain hands-on experience in planning and implementing activities for a diverse group of children, preparing them to address varying needs effectively.

The program runs daily from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Each day includes assembly time, group activities focusing on gross and fine motor skills, individualized one-on-one sessions, snack time, and music sessions. The day concludes with a discussion and feedback session between parents and trainers.

Training of Trainers (TOT) – PCTP

The Training of Trainers (TOT) program is an advanced extension of the PCTP, designed to equip parents with the skills required to become trainers themselves. This initiative represents a key human resource development effort by the Autism Care Nepal Society, aimed at expanding PCTP services across different districts of Nepal.

The first batch of TOT-PCTP was launched in Kartik 2074. Since then, five batches have been successfully conducted, with 16 parents graduating from districts including Kaski, Jhapa, Rupandehi, Surkhet, Gulmi, Chitwan, and Kathmandu. Following their training, PCTP programs have been initiated in these districts, marking a significant milestone in the decentralization and expansion of services.

In addition, a short 10-day online training program has been introduced to support parents who are unable to attend the in-person two-month training or who reside outside the country. The first batch of this online training has been successfully completed.

PCTP 54th Batch

I am grateful to Kripa Ma’am, Dhanu Ma’am and the team of ACNS for their continuous support, motivation, guidance and kindness. This training is an eye opener for me as it brought a sense of acceptance about my child’s autism. Due to this change in me, there have been many positive changes in my child’s behavior. He has now learnt to communicate his few basic needs through pictures. He follows our instructions and has developed imitation skills.

Thank you PCTP for empowering me and creating a support group.
