Walkathon For Autism by KUSOM
in collaboration with ACN |
|

As
a part of their annual festival,
the students of Kathmandu
University School of Management
had organized a walkathon on Dec
10, in collaboration with Autism
Care Nepal, Community Based
Rehabilitation Organization and
Rotary clubs around the Valley
to disseminate awareness on
Autism.
The walk was concluded at the
premises of KUSOM, Balkumari.
There Dr. Sunita Maleku Amatya
gave
a speech on Autism and thanked
all at KUSOM for the walk.
Viewswas also expressed by Mr.
Deepak
Shakya, parent of a child with
Autism. It was a very noble
initiative by students of KUSOM.
Autism Care
Nepal extends it heartfelt
gratitude to all students and
faculties of KUSOM.

Workshop on Autism Music
Therapy and Art Therapy
conducted at ACN |

On
17th and 18th of December a
"Workshop on Autism Music
Therapy and Art Therapy"
conducted at
ACN by Music Therapy Trust Nepal
and Autism Care Nepal. The
workshop was attended by parents
and teachers of children with
Autism, Students of Psychology,
social work and different
faculties.
Introduction on Autism spectrum
disorders was given by Dr Sunita
Maleku Amatya Chairperson of ACN
and Sijan Shakya, special
educator at ACN. Music therapy
was introduced by Music
Therapist Mr. Kedar
Gandhari, and Miss Liesbeth
Staelens, clinical psychologist
and student music therapy. Art
Therapy
was introduced by Mr. Raj Kaji
Prajapatii, psychologist and art
therapist. Musical program was
also
conducted by special guest
‘Gandharba Community’ and
Belgian lunch also followed.

Introductory Seminar on Autism
for Teacher |

On
27th November 2011, AutismCare
Nepal in association with
District Education Office (DEO)
(Tahchal) organised an
“Introductory Seminar on Autism
for Teacher”. The one day
introductory seminar was held in
the premises of AutismCare Nepal
in which twenty teachers from
different schools in the valley
were present. The seminar was
initiated by Mr.Navraj Niroula,
School Supervisor of DEO, with
introduction of participants and
the motive of the seminar. Dr.
Sunita Maleku Amatya,
chairperson of ACN and Mrs.
Sijan Shakya, Special Educator
and Education co-ordinator of
ACN conducted the seminar. Most
of the participant teachers were
introduced to Autism for the
first time and everyone felt
very well informed about Autism
in the seminar.

Bikas Bank Ltd, Basundhara
branch, Kathmandu celebrated
their 1st anniversary by
donating gifts to the children
with Autism at AutismCare Nepal.
The gift consisted of story
books, cello tapes, lamination
paper, water colors, xerox
papers, chart papers, crayons,
puzzles, magnetic boards etc.
The staffs of Vibor Bank also
interacted with the children and
experienced autism. AutismCare

AutismCare Nepal was very
excited to welcome members of
HealthCare Nepal on 24th October
2011. Mr. Jack Starmer, Director
of HealthCare Nepal, along with
Dr. Fredrick Basilico, a
cardiologist and Dr Judith
Waligunda, MD, Internal
Medicine, New England Baptist
Hospital, Boston and also the
chairperson of HealthCare Nepal;
were very happy visiting ACN.
They interacted with members and
parents at ACN. They also
interacted with children and
toured the premises. They were
very glad to meet Mrs. Sijan
Shakya, the first Special
educator in Autism who completed
her Diploma in Special Education
with the support from Health
Care Nepal. ACN would like to
thank them all for supporting
ACN and Autism in Nepal.

Mrs. Sijan Shakya, a proud
mother of Child with Autism;
Dipankar, 8 years old has proved
to be more special mom. She
gathered all her effort and
energy to complete Diploma
course on Special Education (ASD)
from Action for Autism, National
Centre for Autism, New Delhi. It
is a Diploma course recognized
by Rehabilitation Centre of
India.
AutismCare Nepal is privileged
to sponsor her Diploma with the
financial help from HealthCare
Nepal. We also would like to
extend our thanks to Action for
Autism in helping in many ways
to help her in this mission.
She is first Special educator
who is trained in Autism.

A team of 11 experts on Autism
organized by Knowledge for
People arrived Kathmandu on 9th
july2011. This complete team
serving different necessities
for therapeutic purpose of
Autism; included Speech and
Language pathologist,
occupational therapist,
Behavioral therapists, TEACCH
Expert s. They were
Lizzy Donovan: Lizzy is a Senior
Educational Consultant at ABC of
NC (http://abcofnc.org). She has
over 12 years of working with
children who have autism and
their families and she is
currently completing her
supervision to become a Board
Certified Assistant Behavior
Analyst. Lizzy was the Autism
Society of North Carolina’s
Professional of the Year in
2008.
Valorie Greene: Valorie has over
20 years of experience as a
special education teacher and
autism specialist in Oregon. She
provides behavior consultation
and conducts in-services and
trainings about autism spectrum
disorders.
Heather Higgins: Heather has
over 12 years of experience
working with children and
families. She is a Speech and
Language Pathologist who has
studied both the medical model
and educational model for
treatments. Currently, she
conducts therapy with the Hello
Foundation in Oregon.
Selene Johnson: Selene is
currently the Executive Director
of ABC of NC in North Carolina.
She is also a Board Certified
Behavior Analyst, Licensed
Special Education Teacher and
Infant/Toddler Family
Specialist.
Liz Kleine: Liz has been working
with children who have autism
and their families since 2004.
She currently works in the
autism center at Seattle
Children's Hospital and her
primary focus is on behavior and
ABA.
Christine O'Shea: Christine is
an occupational therapist at
Pediatric Therapy Network in
California. She has advanced
training in Ayres Sensory
Integration and she has been
working with children with
autism for the past 5 years in
different aspects (behavioral
therapist, research, and
occupational therapist).
Renee Poole: Renee has been
working with children and
teenagers who have autism for
the past 4 years. She began her
career working with ASTAR
(Autism Spectrum Treatment and
Research) and she currently
works at Seattle Children's
Hospital in the Autism Center
and Research Institute.
Beth Reynolds: Beth has worked
for TEACCH for the last 10 years
as a TEACCH trainer and
consultant. She has helped set
up classrooms using the TEACCH
model in Ireland, England, and
all over the United States.
Tracy Vail: Tracy is a Speech
and Language Pathologist who has
been working with children who
have autism for 29 years. She
helped start the Mariposa School
for Children with autism and is
currently a co-owner of Let's
Talk Speech & Language Services
in North Carolina.
Training was conducted for 32
people in three different
groups. Group 1 and group 2 had
intensive hands on training on
occupational therapy and sensory
integration, ABA, floor-time,
play therapy, TEAACH.
Participants also had
opportunity to see practical
demo on children with different
needs.
Group 3 had advanced training on
communication for total of 6
days. In which different
component of communication
applying on VBA were discussed.
Communication and social skill
assessment tool VB-MAP was
introduced then applied on 3
different level children as
demo. The participants on this
group also learned how to use
manual of VB-MAP for assessing
communication and social skill
then also to provide Goals to
work on. Group 3 further had 2
days intensive training on
TEAACH and structure
classroom/Home work setup.
The
team of 32 participants
comprised of parents and
professionals. This training has
significantly uplifted knowledge
of Autism and necessary
therapies to parents and
professionals in their daily
life and work. For a developing
country like Nepal with limited
resource such kind of different
level training needs continuity
in order to develop resource and
establish service.
AutismCare Nepal is very
grateful to Knowledge for People
organizing such a useful
training. We appreciate the
dedication and knowledge sharing
from all the trainers across
states. We also would like to

Autism Speaks and the People’s
Republic of Bangladesh – with
direct leadership from Saima
Wazed Hossain and support from
the office of the Prime Minister
and Ministry of Health–worked
together to develop and deliver
programs to address the autism
challenges in Bangladesh and the
region through GAPH. Autism
Speaks’ Global Autism Public
Health initiative (GAPH) is an
ambitious international advocacy
effort that strives to help
autism communities around the
world to develop and implement
feasible, effective, and
sustainable program solutions.
Additional collaborators
included leadership from
WHO-Geneva as well as
representation from the South
East Asian Regional Office (SEARO)
of the WHO. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi
was the chief Guest to the
event.
Among all the South East Asian
country, as a SEARO
representative Dr. Sunita Maleku
Amatya was also invited by Saima
Wazed Hossain, daughter of Prime
Minister, Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
commended international
organization, WHO, Autism
Speaks, and other regional
organizations and collaboration
among countries to develop
better identification methods
,to improve treatment options
and create an adequate network
of essesntial services across
the region.
Mr.
Juan Carlos Brandt, chief of
Advocacy and Special Events,
Department of Public
Information, UN applauded this
gigantic and crucial effort
acknowledging this global
demand. He also thanked parents
all over the world who have been
working very hard with their
children with autism.
Saima Hossain, School
psychologist, Chair, National
Advisory Committee on Autism in
Bangladesh expressed her honor
to be a part of launching Autism
Speaks Global Autism Public
Health Initiative in Bangladesh.
She also added she is ready to
help every step of the way to
make this world more accessible
more compassionate and more
understanding of the needs of
our beautiful children.
Merry Barua, Director National
Centre of Autism, India admitted
creating awareness and asserting
recognition of the condition had
to go hand in hand with
advocating for the rights and
entitlements of persons with
autism. She highlighted the
equal importance of creating
awareness amongst medical
professionals, government and
policy makers and educational
professionals.
Dana Marnane, Vice president of
Awareness and Events of Autism
Speaks, presented on how
important it is to encourage
families to learn about the
condition of their child
different strategies in raising
awareness about Autism. They
have been successful in raising
autism awareness 45% among the
US general public.
Andy Shih, Vice President of
Scientific Affairs, Autism
Speaks, welcomed international
organization to come together in
conducting joint research
projects where common solutions
can be worked out.
Dr.
Vijaya Chandra, Regional
Advisor, Mental health and
substance Abuse, WHO SEARO, New
Delhi, expressed the importance
of dealing Autism in Community
based service.
Different countries put up with
their health care service and
education service which has been
implemented for the condition of
Autism. AutismCare Nepal as one
and only parent run organization
in Nepal, Dr. Amatya got the
privilege to overview through
the activities of AutismCare
Nepal, its short term and long
term needs. She on her speech
requested the Government and
international organization to
help children with autism and
families in Nepal to achieve
their goal.

Two
days workshop on “Child
Development and Disabilities”
was organized by Autism Care
Nepal in association with IAP
and Ummeed Child Development, at
its premises on 7th and 8th May
2011 to train the pediatricians
from different hospitals within
and outside the valley for
earlier diagnosis of Autism and
other Developmental Disorders.
The facilitators were Dr
Vibha Krishnamurthy Medical
Director at Ummeed Child
Development Center and has 15
years of experience working with
children with developmental
disabilities. She is also Staff
Physician, Department of
Medicine, Children’s Hospital,
Boston, USA and Consultant
Pediatrician, Developmental
Disorders, Jaslok Hospital and
Research Centre, Mumbai, India
Dr Koyeli Sengupta
Developmental Pediatrician at
Ummeed CDC, has a Masters in
Clinical Psychology from Eastern
Illinois University, USA.
The workshop had a unique format
of interactive case based
discussions, videos illustrated
concept and role play to
understand new tools (i.e. GMCD
and M-CHAT) for monitoring child
development from 0 to 3 yrs.
During the workshop participant
learnt to identify common
developmental disorders and
understood bio-psychosocial
approach and family centered
approach to developmental
behavioral concerns
Pediatricians from different
hospitals within and outside the
valley participated in this
workshop.20 participants
included pediatricians and
psychologists from Kanti
Children Hospital, Patan
Hospital, Maternity Hospital,
Bheri Zonal Hospital, Kist
Medical College, Nepal Academy
of Medical Sciences and Autism
Care Nepal.

WAAD Celebration in Nepal |

April 2nd
2011 World Autism Awareness Day
was celebrated in Nepal
organized by AutismCare Nepal.
The Walkathon assembled at Hotel
De’L Annapurna and started from
there at 8 am. The rally
walked with the Banner written
“Walkathon, World Autism
Awareness Day” with the theme
“Are you Aware of Autism”; It
reached Durbarmarg, along the
Narayan Hiti palace crossed
Nagpokhari, Naxal and Gairidhara
chowk to reach Autism Care Nepal
at Neel Saraswati Marg. Our
popular Nepali celebrity Madan
Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha
Acharya led the procession.
People from all different work
of life attended the walkathon.
On one side there were parents,
caretakers and family members of
children with autism and on the
other side, there were
participation from different
Rotary club, Innerwheel club,
Rotract, Senior citizen
organization, Different
disability organization,
teachers, students and
volunteers. The member of
International Human Right Watch,
New York Mrs. Shantha also
participated in walk. Director
of Special Education Department
from Ministry of Education,
Nepal, Mr. Arun Tiwari also
participated in the walk . Many
media personels also
enthusiastically covered the
event and also took part in it.
The procession was very co-ordinated
with the help of Nepal Traffic
Police. There were participation
from foreign friends.The walk
ended at AutismCare Nepal,
Gairidhara . The distance of
walk was nearly 3km.
At ACN,
Gairidhara there was a short
programme organized. The
programme was hosted by Mr.
Krishna Lamsal active executive
member of ACN. The programme
started with welcome speech from
Chairperson, AutismCare Nepa,
and Dr.Sunita Maleku Amatya. She
highlighted on the purpose of
Walk, different acitivities
conducted in ACN and thanked all
the parents, friends inside and
outside country, volunteers,
staff members, well wishers for
making the activities of ACN
successful.
The mood of
the programme changed with the
solo performance on keyboard
played by Master Nirakar Bista,
a 12 year old boy who also has
autism. He gracefully performed
playing music of 3 different
popular Nepali song, phool ko
thunga ma, resham phiriri, and
one English song”We shall
overcome….”
Followed by
witty questions answer session
with Master Pritish Shakya, a 8
year old boy who also has
autism. He very enthusiastically
answered to the entire question,
drawing good attention of
audience. He then sang a Nepali
song” Sana sana putali…..”
Former
President of AutismCare Nepal
Dr.HemSagar Baral introduced and
launched “Buy a brick
programme”which highlighted on
dreams of AutismCare Nepal to
build a school, Home and
Vocational centre for children
and adults with autism. Many of
the participants kindly donated
for this cause on that very day.
A total of Rs36000/ was
collected.
The Director
from special education
Department, Ministry of Health
gave his view on prioritizing
this upgoing disability as
autism and promised to take
active role in helping establish
education facility for these
needy children.
There was
also the presence of Mr. Batuk
Raj Bhandari, who gave an
inspirational talk on the
journey of any Disability
related organization and
congratulated on the
achievements of ACN.
The programme
was adjourned with the “thank
you” note from Professor Dr.
Deepak Mahara. He thanked all
the donors and sponsors for the
WAAD celebration.
The day ended
with High tea and a smile on
everyone face.
Sometimes,
ordinary people doing
extraordinary things, come
together for a common cause to
change the future and in doing
so, changes the world.

World Autism Awareness Day

On December
18, 2007, the United Nations
General Assembly adopted
resolution 62/139, tabled by the
State of Qatar, which declares
April 2 as World Autism
Awareness Day (WAAD) in
perpetuity. This UN resolution
is one of only three official
disease-specific United Nations
Days that bring the world's
attention to autism, a pervasive
disorder that affects tens of
millions. The World Autism
Awareness Day resolution
encourages all Member States to
take measures to raise awareness
about autism throughout society
and to encourage early diagnosis
and early intervention.
World Autism Awareness
Day shines a bright light on
autism as a growing global
health crisis. It is important
in other ways as well because
Autism care Nepal was also born
on this day on 2008. It's our
pleasure to announce that Autism
Care Nepal is
celebrating World Autism
Awareness Day on 2nd April,
2011, at its premises Gairidhara,
Kathmandu, to celebrate its
successful completion of third
year of service to children with

A simple touch of great
kindness, Dr. Vikram Dua and
Mrs. Shawna Goodrich Dua |

Dr
Vikram Dua, a Child
Psychiatrist and Former Medical
Director of the British Columbia
Autism Assessment and Complex
Developmental Behavioural
Conditions Networks, Canada; is
a well known name at Autism Care
Nepal and its members. He has
done a lot for its development.
Firstly he trained Mrs. Rena
Shrestha (psychologist) in ADOS
(Autism Diagnostic Observation
Scale) and also provided ADOS
kit free to Autism Care Nepal.
He organized a lecture at Autism
care Nepal on World Autism
Awareness day. He also did
assessment of more than 25 kids
at Autism Care Nepal in 3 days.
His wife Mrs Shawna Goodrich Dua
and his two children had also
accompanied Dr. Dua in his visit
to Nepal. After returning to
Canada they have organized an
India Night; in which they
cooked Indian meals, kept silent
auction and raised funds for
Autism Care Nepal. They have
generously donated the entire
sum to Autism Care Nepal. Autism
Care Nepal, its children and all
its members are very thankful
for the love and generosity that

prepares students to qualify as

regular as well as integrated
set – ups. The duration for the

toured the premises of ACN. ACN

Around the world, people with
Autism, their parents, other
care givers and autism groups
are organising events during
April in honor of World Autism
Awareness Day (WAAD), 2nd April.
This year, is the first time
that World Autism Awareness day
has been celebrated in
Kathmandu, Nepal. While Shah
Rukh Khan’s enactment of a
character who has autism in his
recent film My Name is Khan and
the Zee TV hit Aap Ki Antara
have both helped to bring
attention to autism, awareness
of Autism in Nepal still remains
very low.
Celebration at Autism care Nepal
of World Autism Awareness Day
was started at 10 am with

Presentation
on “Autism and Autism Care
Nepal” was presented at the XVth
Congress of Nepal Pediatric
Society by Dr. Sunita Maleku
Amatya on 27th March 2010. The
event was organized by Nepal
Pediatric Society at Annapurna
Hotel. More than 150
pediatricians from all over
Nepal had participated in the
event. Autism Care Nepal also
freely distributed, a copies of
“Autism Spectrum Disorders, A
guide for Pediatricians in
India” by Action for Autism, New
Delhi, India. |

Autism
care Nepal is a small
organization started by parents
of children with Autism on 2
April 2008, the auspicious
occasion of the World Autism
Awareness Day and it is the only
active autism organization in
Nepal that is run by passionate
parents that care for autistic
children. To celebrate World
Autism Awareness day and its
successful completion of second
year of service to children with
Autism and their family
Autism Care Nepal is organizing
a Function on 2nd April 2010, 10
am, at its premises at
Gairidhara, Kathmandu Nepal.
Many national and international
dignitaries have been invited
for the celebration. Lets make
this celebration a great
success. All the members of
Autism Care Nepal are invited to
attend the celebration. |

Vikram Dua
Dr. Vikram Dua will be talking
about Autism at the premises of
Autism Care Nepal on 2nd April
2010, 2 pm. All the parents,
professionals, teachers are
invited to attend the

Introduction to Dr. Vikram
Dua
Vikram Dua is a child and
adolescent and forensic
psychiatrist. He completed his
medical school training at
McMaster University in Hamilton
and then went on to do a
residency at Harvard Medical
School, and a fellowship at the
University of Massachusetts. He
is Associate Clinical Professor
in the Department of Psychiatry
at UBC.
Dr. Dua served as the primary
research and writer for the
Ministry of Health policy paper:
Standards and Guidelines for the
Diagnosis and Assessment of
Young Children with Autism
Spectrum Disorder. He is the
former Medical Director of the
BC Autism Assessment and Complex
Developmental Behavioural
Conditions Networks. He is a
member of the Mental Health
Commission of Canada – Mental
Health and Law Advisory
Committee. |
